This is one of those times where I should probably be doing literally anything other than writing a blog, but oh well.

Exhibition prep is well under way. I’ve chosen to paint the walls of my exhibition space a really light peach. I’m hoping that it will contrast nicely with the super-greens in some of my electric fired work and complement the oranges from the soda-salt stuff. Install for the year-end exhibition at Medalta starts middle of May.

There will be a separate post about the exhibition itself, and I’ll actually make a page for it so you can read my exhibition statement when the time comes. I’ve called it frogsong, and it opens on May 23, 2025 alongside my incredible fellow year-long artists: Stefanie Smith and Etty Anderson.
Recently me and Leandra fired a very successful soda kiln. I’m still very much learning atmospheric firing processes but I’m so grateful to have so many people around me who know what they’re doing. It’s been so great learning from everyone.
I also ran some tests in the soda and salt kilns with my NSCAD Sh*t Clay (NSC). In salt and soda NSC can go a bright brick red and where the salt/soda hits the clay it goes a mottled greywhite. Something I found really interesting was that when the NSC was placed on the top/front part of the stack it went red. When placed closer to the bottom/back of the stack it stays a buffstone beige. The variation is clear in the below image of my dirt-chunk dainty tray (still working on a title).
